The Do228 NXT takes flight: the return of a great Turboprop

On May 2, 2026, General Atomics AeroTec Systems (achieved a major milestone for the Do228 NXT program: the successful first flight of the demonstrator from Oberpfaffenhofen airfield in Germany. This event marks the renaissance of a legendary aircraft, more than 45 years after its original entry into service.

The Dornier Do228, renowned for its exceptional STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capabilities, robustness on unprepared runways, and operational versatility, is back in a thoroughly modernized form. The new Do228 NXT will remain a multi-role platform, but tailored to the contemporary needs of both civil and military operators.

What are the main new features of the Do228 NXT?

While retaining the proven airframe architecture and Honeywell TPE331 engines, the NXT incorporates numerous improvements focused on reliability, comfort, avionics, and operating costs:

  • Breaks: optimized braking system.
  • Avionics: Integrated avionics suite (Universal EFI-890R), featuring four large electronic flight displays, digital autopilot, advanced flight management system (RNP/LPV), SBAS/WAAS GPS, TCAS II, weather radar, and next-generation dual AHRS (Attitude and Heading Reference System). The cockpit is night-vision compatible and optimized for surveillance missions.
  • Interior / confort: electric air conditioning system, modern LED cabin lighting
  • and Versatility: Completely redesigned interior with a rectangular cabin cross-section offering more space and high flexibility (passengers – up to 19 people, cargo, MedEvac, parachuting, maritime surveillance, etc.). The passenger door can be converted into a large cargo door for rapid role changes.

The supply chain has been renewed as well, with increased in-house component manufacturing and optimized production processes (weight and cost reduction). The aircrafts will benefit of an eco-friendly wing coating that is more corrosion-resistant.

The Do228 NXT retains its historical strengths: outstanding STOL performance, ability to operate from nearly any type of runway, legendary reliability, and multiple configurations for regional transport, surveillance, search and rescue, and special operations.

With this successful maiden flight, General Atomic Aerotac GA-ATS is already preparing the next steps: intensive flight testing, public presentations (this summer at ILA Berlin and Farnborough). First deliveries are expected in the coming months.

It is always a pleasure to see a « vintage but reliable » aircraft being transformed in a renewd version, suitable for modern uses.
